K&N air filter air flow test

Monday, June 13th, 2011

This is what really convinced me that K&N filters are the way to go:

You get increased airflow which has to lead to increased performance and gas mileage. I have a K and N air filter in my Harley, Subaru, Chevy RV and BMW. With gas north of the $4 mark here still in CA anything to get even a little more gas mileage helps.

See Retrocycle’s full like of K and N products here

My Harley is better for the environment than your Prius!

Gas guzzling polluter!

prius

I was thinking about this yesterday:

  • My Harley gets around 45 mpg in daily use. The Prius: around 40?
  • There is very little plastic used in the making of my Harley. Fewer nasty chemicals. Its almost all metal which is easier to recycle and less damaging on the environment to produce.
  • Who recycles a Harley anyway? We ride them and ride them, then fix them up and ride them more!
  • I smile more riding my Harley than someone trying to squeeze mpg out of a Prius. Smiles have to be good for the environment! (or have I just been in CA too long…)
  • Half the number of rubber tires to have to recycle.
  • FAR fewer batteries to recycle!

Sure I make more noise and carry less passengers. And there is no catalytic converter so the exhaust gases are not broken down the same way. Is there something else I am missing?

What is a Compression Release and Why is it on my Bike?

Monday, January 10th, 2011

As defined by Wikipedia:

A compression release mechanism works to ease the starting of internal combustion engines by allowing them to spin up to starting speed without having to work against the pumping action of the pistons. It does this through a release valve that is incorporated within the cylinder head that vents the cylinder pressure to the outside atmosphere until the engine has sufficient momentum to overcome it. At that point the valve closes and the ignition is engaged.

Basically this lets your bike start easier. Be it by foot or by starter motor. This is especially important on high performance large displacement bikes like Big Dog and other S&S engine based custom bikes.

When yours goes bad here is the tool to replace the compression release valve

We sell Automatic compression release valves as well as the S&S compression release kit.
